I am currently the retail placement student working in the Telford store as the Department Manager of Mountain, Ski and Watersports.
The first four to five months on my placement were centered mostly around learning about the company and its values and my role within it. Through this I was able to undertake a lot of interesting and informative trainings around the country, which enabled me to learn about being a manager and getting the most out of my team, as well as becoming more knowledgeable about the products in my department.
I have a team of six people who I have monthly individual meetings with, annual reviews, and set weekly priorities to make sure they are performing to a high standard. In this last month, I have successfully planned and carried out two seasonal moves, and I am currently planning the third one. As Telford was a new store when I started my placement, I have been able to experiment with new ideas in store, which has been a great experience.
I will be returning to Loughborough University in September, but hope to pursue a career with Decathlon in services, hopefully digital marketing, after I graduate.
I’m currently the recruitment marketing placement student working in services at Surrey Quays Flagship store.
At the beginning of my placement, the main important factor was for me to learn about the company and really understand the values. While this was very demanding to have a lot of information given my way, it was really fun and exciting to see what makes a decathlete. This company is for the sport lovers and it’s what brings us all together.
I belong to recruitment and digital team and its been really amazing having support behind me constantly. My responsibilities are wide ranging from looking after the job’s website, the careers support and then on the other hand the social media with the content creation. This role has taught lots about organising my time to being able to complete tasks on time. Decathlon allows for a lot of responsibility so its important to use your time wisely and make the most of the opportunity that I’ve been given.
I think one the hardest things, is adapting from university to the workplace. Thankfully everyone in Decathlon was very understanding and made me feel very welcome. Sport is what we all live for and it’s amazing to practise it with everyone you work with. This placement had been excellent so far, and I hope when I return to university in the future. I will have a place here in the future.
